Description: On the morning of September 11, 2001, four al-Qaeda members—Ziad Jarrah, Saeed al-Ghamdi, Ahmed al-Nami, and Ahmed al-Haznawi—gathered in a Newark, New Jersey hotel to pray. After Jarrah made a final phone call to his girlfriend, they boarded United Airlines Flight 93, which was piloted by Captain Jason Dahl and First Officer LeRoy Homer Jr. The flight departed from Newark International Airport, carrying passengers including Tom Burnett, Todd Beamer, Jeremy Glick, Richard Guadagno, Louis J. Nacke II, Lauren Grandcolas, and Mark Bingham, who nearly missed the flight. Due to airport traffic, United 93 experienced a slight delay.
Meanwhile, air traffic controllers lost contact with American Airlines Flight 11, which had diverted toward New York City. Suspicious transmissions confirmed it had been hijacked. Shortly after United 93 took off, Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. United Airlines Flight 175 was also hijacked and headed toward New York City. Air traffic controllers discovered that American Airlines Flight 77 had been hijacked as well, and they watched in horror as Flight 175 struck the South Tower.
On United 93, passengers were served breakfast, but Jarrah hesitated to initiate the hijacking. Dahl and Homer received an ACARS message warning them of the WTC attacks and advising them to secure the cockpit. After Nami failed to convince Jarrah to act, Haznawi prepared a fake bomb in the lavatory. Ghamdi then threatened flight attendant Deborah Welsh with a knife, and passenger Mark Rothenberg was fatally wounded by Haznawi. As Haznawi and Nami forced the passengers to the back of the plane, Ghamdi killed both pilots and Welsh, despite their mayday call. Jarrah took control of the aircraft and redirected it toward Washington, D.C., intending to crash it into a target.
