**Storyline:**
In 1280, King Edward “Longshanks” of England invades and conquers Scotland after the death of Alexander III, who left no heir to the throne. Young William Wallace witnesses Longshanks’ betrayal and the execution of Scottish nobles, endures the loss of his father and brother in the fight against the English, and is taken on a pilgrimage across Europe by his uncle Argyle, who ensures Wallace receives an education.
Years later, Longshanks grants his noblemen land and privileges in Scotland, including Prima Nocte. Meanwhile, Wallace returns to Scotland and secretly marries his childhood love, Murron MacClannough. After Wallace saves Murron from an assault by English soldiers, she is captured and publicly executed. Seeking vengeance, Wallace leads his clan to slaughter the English garrison in his hometown and sends a message of rebellion to Longshanks.
Longshanks orders his son, Prince Edward, to stop Wallace by any means while he secures an alliance with France. With his friend Hamish, Wallace rebels against the English, and his growing legend inspires hundreds of Scots to join him. Wallace achieves victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge and captures York, sending the severed head of Longshanks’ nephew to the king. He seeks help from Robert the Bruce, a contender for the Scottish crown, who is influenced by his leper father to submit to the English.
Concerned by the rebellion, Longshanks sends his son’s wife, Isabella of France, to negotiate with Wallace as a distraction for another invasion. After meeting Wallace, Isabella becomes deeply impressed by him.”
