**Storyline:**
Kepler 822, a research and drilling facility operated by Tian Industries at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, is hit by a powerful earthquake. The quake destroys part of the facility, forcing mechanical engineer Norah Price and her colleagues, Rodrigo and Paul, to head to the escape pod bay. Upon arrival, they discover all escape pods have already been launched, leaving only Captain Lucien in the area. The group moves to a control base, where they find biologist Emily Haversham and engineer Liam Smith, who are unable to establish contact with the surface.
Lucien proposes using pressurized suits to walk a mile across the ocean floor to Roebuck 641 to resurface. As they descend in a freight elevator, Rodrigo’s faulty helmet implodes under the water pressure, killing him. The remaining crew spots a distress beacon from an escape pod below and sends Smith and Paul to investigate. They find a body in the rubble, but a mysterious creature emerges from it and attacks. Smith kills the creature and brings it back for analysis. Haversham identifies it as an unknown species.
The crew continues toward the sea floor, but Kepler explodes above them, nearly burying them in debris. Smith is injured, but Price and Lucien save him. They reach an intermediate station to recharge and clean their suits, only to realize Smith’s oxygen scrubber is severely damaged. While moving through an access tunnel, Paul is attacked and killed by another creature. Smith’s damaged oxygen pod also begins to fail, exposing him to toxic fumes. Determined not to leave him behind, Price, Lucien, and Haversham decide to help Smith continue their journey.
