**Plot Summary:**
“Two Days, One Night” (French: “Deux jours, une nuit”) is a 2014 drama film written and directed by the Dardenne brothers, featuring Marion Cotillard and Fabrizio Rongione in lead roles. The film premiered in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, vying for the prestigious Palme d’Or. It garnered critical acclaim, winning the Sydney Film Prize at the 2014 Sydney Film Festival and earning nominations for several awards, including the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language, two César Awards, and nine Magritte Awards, of which it won three, including Best Film and Best Director for Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne.
The story is set in Seraing, a small industrial town near Liège, Belgium. Sandra, a young wife and mother, is preparing to return to her job at Solwal, a solar-panel factory, after taking medical leave for depression and anxiety. During her absence, the company realizes that her colleagues can manage her workload by extending their hours. The management offers a €1,000 bonus to each employee if they agree to make Sandra redundant.
Upon learning of this decision and discovering that only two out of her 16 coworkers voted in favor of keeping her job, Sandra is devastated, feeling hopeless and worthless. Her husband, Manu, tries to uplift her spirits, and her friend Juliette, who supported her during the vote, encourages her to appeal to the factory manager, M. Dumont. Despite her initial fear, Sandra and Juliette persuade Dumont to hold a second, secret ballot on Monday, giving Sandra a glimmer of hope to save her job.
The film also made history as Belgium’s submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards. Although it did not receive a nomination, Marion Cotillard earned a Best Actress nomination, marking the first time an actor was nominated for a role in a Belgian film.
