Description: Twice Born, a 2012 film, tells the story of Gemma, who travels to Sarajevo with her son Pietro. They had fled the city sixteen years earlier, just days after his birth during the Bosnian War. Diego, her second husband and Pietro’s presumed father, stayed behind and later died. Accompanied by her wartime friend Gojko, Gemma attempts to mend her strained relationship with Pietro while wrestling with whether to reveal to him that she is not his biological mother. She consults her third husband over the phone for advice.
During their journey, Gemma is shocked to discover that Pietro’s biological mother, Aska, is still alive and married to Gojko. Aska reveals a devastating truth: contrary to Gemma’s long-held belief, Diego was not Pietro’s father. Aska had been a victim of the Serb Volunteer Guard during the war. Gemma is forced to confront themes of loss, the harrowing costs of war, and the enduring power of love.
This emotional narrative delves into the complexities of identity, family, and the scars left by conflict.
