Description: Set in 1947, Vinayak Rao shares a tale with his 14-year-old son Pandurang about the Goddess of Prosperity. She represents boundless wealth and sustenance, with the earth serving as her womb. During the creation of the universe, she birthed 160 million gods. Among them, Hastar, her first and most cherished child, exhibited insatiable greed for her gold and food. Though Hastar successfully seized the gold, the other gods intervened just as he attempted to claim the food. The goddess spared him on the condition that he would never be worshipped and would fade into obscurity.
For centuries, Hastar lay dormant within his mother’s womb. Yet, the inhabitants of Tumbbad defy this ancient prohibition by constructing a temple in his honor, inciting the wrath of the gods. The village is subsequently cursed with endless rain.
In 1918, in Tumbbad, Maharashtra, Vinayak’s mother serves the local lord, Sarkar, in his estate. Her duties include providing him with sexual services in exchange for a gold coin kept near his Hastar statue. Meanwhile, Vinayak and his younger brother Sadashiv struggle to feed their monstrous great-grandmother, who is chained in a separate room. After Sarkar’s death, Vinayak’s mother suggests relocating to Pune.
However, Vinayak is determined to uncover the rumored treasure hidden within the mansion. Tragedy strikes when Sadashiv falls from a tree and is severely injured, compelling their mother to seek medical help. She instructs Vinayak to feed their grandmother that night and warns him to utter Hastar’s name if she awakens. Sadly, Sadashiv succumbs to his injuries en route to the doctor. Their mother returns to Sarkar’s mansion to retrieve the gold coin.
