Description: In pre-independence India, Laxman Singh Bisht, a mentally-challenged child, is often bullied by his friends, who nickname him “Tubelight.” Despite this, his younger brother Bharat always stands up for him. Over time, they grow closer as they witness significant events like Gandhi’s visit to their school, India’s independence in 1947, Gandhi’s assassination, and the death of their parents.
In October 1962, when China invades India, the Indian Army begins recruiting. Bharat is chosen and assigned to the Kumaon Regiment. As the war intensifies, Bharat’s unit faces heavy attacks, leaving Laxman desperately searching for news about his brother. During this period, Laxman encounters a magician, Gogo Pasha, who teaches him that “faith” can achieve the impossible. Inspired, Laxman tries to use faith to reunite with Bharat but struggles to make it work.
Meanwhile, Bharat is injured and captured by Chinese forces. He attempts to escape with fellow prisoners but fails, resulting in their deaths. In a selfless act, Bharat swaps his boots with another soldier to give him a chance to flee, though it ultimately proves futile.
Back home, Laxman befriends a woman named Le Leing and her son Gu Won, initially mistaking them for Chinese due to their appearance. After realizing they are Assamese, he forms a bond with them, guided by the wisdom of Gandhi and the advice of a village elder.
The story explores themes of faith, brotherhood, and resilience during a tumultuous period in Indian history.
