Description: The film “Tryst With Destiny” from 2020 delves into the enduring inequalities present in India, showcasing four distinct stories. These narratives explore themes such as skin color obsession, caste divisions, greed, and revenge, shedding light on age-old societal conflicts that persist today.
Directed by Prashant Nair, this Indo-French production draws inspiration from a historic speech by Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. His vision of an independent India free from poverty, ignorance, and inequality remains relevant even 75 years later, as the film underscores the ongoing struggles against these issues.
The first story, “Fair and Fine,” is set in Mumbai and follows billionaire Galava Mudiraj, portrayed by Ashish Vidyarthi. Starting as a tea seller at Churchgate station at age 11, Mudiraj rose to become one of the city’s most influential figures. Despite his wealth and success, he faces discrimination due to his dark complexion. During a routine swim at a five-star hotel, he rescues a puppy but is mistakenly barred from re-entering the premises by security guards. They shame him with slurs like “Kaala Jamun,” highlighting the harsh reality of color-based prejudice. Mudiraj’s discomfort and the stigma he endures underscore the film’s exploration of societal biases and their impact on individuals.
Through these narratives, “Tryst With Destiny” emphasizes how deeply ingrained inequalities continue to shape actions and attitudes in Indian society.
