Description: It’s time for Netflix’s true crime division to explore the world of cryptocurrencies. Following the success of documentaries like *The Tinder Swindler*, *Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel*, and *Abducted in Plain Sight*, a new documentary is poised to captivate audiences. This film delves into the story of QuadrigaCX, a cryptocurrency exchange shrouded in mystery. Did founder Gerry Cotton fake his own death, or was he poisoned by his wife? More importantly, are the lost coins gone forever? The core rule in the crypto world remains: trust no one.
The documentary focuses on the sudden disappearance of $250 million in Bitcoin from QuadrigaCX, once Canada’s largest crypto exchange. The sole individual who could recover the funds died under suspicious circumstances. Greed takes center stage in this true crime story, chronicling the rise and fall of QuadrigaCX, the enigmatic death of its founder, and the victims left to deal with the aftermath.
The collapse of QuadrigaCX stemmed from fraudulent activities by its co-founder and CEO, Gerald Cotten. Clients entrusted their assets to QuadrigaCX, believing they were secure. However, Cotten freely spent, traded, and misused these assets without oversight. Operating without proper controls, his unchecked actions eventually led to the platform’s downfall.
While it’s not about blaming the victims, the incident highlights the risks of trusting third-party entities. Users handed over custody to a platform with full permissions but no accountability. QuadrigaCX was certified by Canada’s anti-money-laundering authority and held a FinTRAC money-services business license, which may have lured users into a false sense of security.
