The story begins with a confrontation between the Greek forces of King Agamemnon of Mycenae and King Triopas of Thessaly. The conflict is swiftly resolved when Achilles, a legendary warrior fighting for Agamemnon, defeats Triopas’ champion, Boagrius, in single combat. This victory forces Thessaly to join Agamemnon’s alliance of Greek kingdoms.
Meanwhile, Prince Hector of Troy and his younger brother Paris negotiate peace with King Menelaus of Sparta. However, Paris secretly brings Menelaus’ wife, Queen Helen, back to Troy, igniting a crisis. Upon discovering this betrayal, Menelaus seeks the help of his brother, Agamemnon, to launch an attack on Troy and reclaim Helen. Agamemnon agrees, seeing the invasion as an opportunity to gain control of the Aegean Sea. Odysseus, king of Ithaca, convinces Achilles to join the campaign, despite his disdain for Agamemnon. Achilles ultimately decides to participate after his mother, Thetis, foretells that though he will die, his legacy will be immortal.
In Troy, King Priam prepares for war upon Helen’s arrival. The Greeks, led by Achilles and his Myrmidons, successfully invade the Trojan beach and sack the temple of Apollo, leading to tension between Achilles and Hector. After capturing Briseis, a priestess and cousin to Paris and Hector, Achilles becomes enraged when Agamemnon takes her from him. Feeling betrayed, Achilles refuses to assist Agamemnon further.
