Description: In 1977, in the rural town of Wiggly, Georgia, a group of elementary school misfits comes together to form their own Birdie Scouts troop. Led by the spirited outcast Christmas Flint (Mckenna Grace), they join the Birdie Scouts youth group with the goal of winning a talent competition. The prize is the opportunity to have their voices included on the Voyager Golden Record, which Christmas believes will be heard by extraterrestrial life—a connection her late mother cherished. Since the only available troop number left is zero, they embrace it, seeing it as a symbol of infinity despite it being intended as an insult by scout leader Krystal Massey (Allison Janney). Needing a troop mother, they turn to Rayleen (Viola Davis), the secretary of Christmas’s father, who also has a history with Mrs. Massey.
To qualify for the talent show, each member of Troop Zero must earn a scout badge. Along the way, they discover more about themselves and each other. During the contest, they perform an interpretive dance to David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” Christmas becomes nervous and has an accident on stage, but the rest of the troop stands by her, continuing the performance despite the audience’s laughter. In the end, they lose to the favored Birdie Troop Five. However, later that night, a NASA representative joins them during a meteor shower to record their voices for transmission into space. Filled with hope, Christmas expresses her wish that the aliens are happy, that they are looking after her mother, and that they have friends as wonderful as the ones she has found through this experience.
