Description: In 1992, Gordon Townsend explains to his daughters, Amy and Kim, that their parents’ divorce was unavoidable because monogamy is unrealistic. He repeats this belief like a mantra. Twenty-three years later, in 2015, Amy has grown into a party-loving, heavy-drinking woman who writes for a men’s magazine and is in a relationship with Steven, a gym enthusiast. Her strict boss, Dianna, assigns her to write an article about Aaron Conners, a sports doctor. During the interview, Amy receives a text from Kim about moving their father to a less expensive assisted-living facility. This causes her to panic, but Aaron calms her down and invites her to dinner. At dinner, he compliments her writing and shares details about his family. After drinks, Amy suggests going to his place, and they end up spending the night together, breaking her usual rule of never staying over after sex.
The next day, Aaron calls to ask if they can meet again. Feeling anxious, Amy tells him they’ll discuss it later. She confides in her friend Nikki, who advises her to end the relationship. Meanwhile, Aaron’s friend, LeBron James, is thrilled for him since Aaron hasn’t dated in six years. Amy observes Aaron performing surgery while listening to his favorite song, “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel. Later, she tries to break things off, but Aaron insists they have a connection and should continue dating. Soon after, Amy receives news that her father has fallen, and Aaron drives her to see him, taking care of her father during the visit.
As Aaron and Amy start dating, they begin to develop feelings for each other. Amy worries she’ll ruin the relationship, but her sister Kim reassures her that she’s just experiencing normal emotions. Tragedy strikes when Gordon overdoses on his medication and passes away. At the funeral, Amy and Kim argue. Amy accuses Kim of not caring enough about their father, claiming she was always more supportive of him and had adopted a similar perspective on relationships and life over the years.
