Description: By the end of the 21st century, Earth had been ravaged by chemical warfare. The only habitable regions left were two territories: the United Federation of Britain (UFB), covering the British Isles and northwestern Europe, and the Colony, located in Australia. Workers from the Colony commuted daily to the UFB using “The Fall,” a gravity elevator passing through the Earth’s core, which took 17 minutes to traverse. The UFB considered a Resistance movement operating in its territory as terrorists, though their goal was to improve living conditions in the Colony.
Douglas Quaid, a citizen of the Colony, had recurring dreams of being a secret agent, aided by a mysterious woman. Dissatisfied with his factory job building police robots alongside his friend Harry, he visited Rekall, a company specializing in implanting artificial memories. Quaid chose a fantasy of being a secret agent, but during the procedure, technicians discovered he already had real memories of being a spy.
As questions arose about his past, UFB police stormed the facility, killing the Rekall staff and attempting to arrest Quaid. Acting instinctively, Quaid fought back and escaped. When he returned home and shared the story with his wife, Lori, she tried to kill him, revealing she was a UFB intelligence agent. Their marriage, as Quaid knew it, was a fabrication—they had only been together for six weeks, not seven years.
After fleeing, Quaid was contacted by Charles Hammond, who claimed they had worked together in federal intelligence. Hammond directed him to a safe-deposit box containing a message from Quaid himself, leading him to an apartment in the UFB. Upon arrival, Quaid was pursued by Lori and her team but was rescued by Melina, the woman from his dreams.
