Description: Toilet: A Love Story (2017) is a Hindi film that highlights a significant social issue in rural India. Set in the village of Nandgaon, Uttar Pradesh, the story follows Keshav, played by Akshay Kumar, whose father, a superstitious priest, arranges his marriage to a black buffalo in hopes of improving his fortune. However, Keshav falls in love with Jaya, an educated college student, and convinces her to marry him by crafting an artificial thumb to fulfill his father’s astrological condition.
After their marriage, Jaya faces an unexpected challenge in her new home: the lack of a proper toilet. She refuses to defecate in the open, a common practice among the village women, and confronts Keshav about it. Despite his efforts to find temporary solutions, such as using a neighbor’s portable toilet or a train’s restroom, Jaya remains determined to have a proper toilet at home. When one of these attempts goes awry, leading to a frustrating incident, she leaves Keshav and returns to her parents. The film sheds light on the importance of sanitation and challenges societal norms.
