Description: Lara Jean Covey, a shy high school junior, writes heartfelt letters to boys she has intense feelings for, only to keep them hidden in her closet. Her latest letter is addressed to Josh, her childhood friend and her older sister Margot’s ex-boyfriend. Although Lara Jean has always had a crush on Josh, she decides it wouldn’t be right to pursue him after Margot ends their relationship before leaving for college. One evening, Lara Jean falls asleep on the couch while spending time with her younger sister, Kitty, who sneaks into her room and discovers the collection of letters.
The next Monday at school, Lara Jean is shocked when Peter Kavinsky, a former crush, confronts her about the letter she wrote him. Overwhelmed, she faints. Upon waking, she sees Josh approaching with his letter, and in a panic, Lara Jean kisses Peter to divert Josh’s attention before fleeing the scene.
Soon after, Lara Jean realizes that all her letters have been sent out when she encounters Lucas, another recipient who is gay. To avoid both Josh and Peter, Lara Jean leaves her house, but Peter finds her at her favorite diner. She explains that the kiss was meant to discourage Josh, and Peter surprisingly agrees to a plan: they will fake-date to make his ex-girlfriend, Gen, jealous.
Lara Jean agrees, and for the next few months, the entire school, along with their friends and families, believes they are a couple. However, when Peter realizes Gen is truly jealous, he becomes conflicted. Meanwhile, Lara Jean finds herself developing genuine feelings for Peter. During a school ski trip, the two confront their emotions, leading to a heartfelt kiss in a hot tub.
