Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul explored it in his intricate 2021 film, “Memoria.” Director Avinash Arun’s contemplative work, “Three of Us,” offers a unique perspective on this theme.
The film features Shefali Shah as Shailaja, a middle-aged woman from Mumbai, who invites her husband Dipankar to join her on a trip to Vengurla, a quiet village in Maharashtra. Although Dipankar, played by Swanand Kirkire, is accustomed to a mundane routine, he agrees to accompany her. They arrive in Vengurla, where Shailaja spent part of her childhood.
In this picturesque setting, Shailaja reconnects with her childhood friends, who recognize her easily after 28 years. During her visit to the local bank, she unexpectedly encounters her first love, Pradeep, portrayed by Jaideep Ahlawat. Their reunion unfolds without the clichéd flashbacks common in mainstream films, instead focusing on genuine emotions as they reminisce about their past.
The film beautifully captures their journey through shared memories, revisiting old haunts, and reflecting on their lives. Pradeep is portrayed as a complex character, wary of others, yet expressing his emotions through writing and embroidery. Similarly, Dipankar exhibits a quiet generosity that draws parallels with characters from other films like “Past Lives,” although “Three of Us” establishes its own identity with depth and nuance.
