After moving out, Judd receives a call from his sister Wendy, played by Tina Fey, informing him of their father Mort’s passing. The Altman family gathers at their mother’s home for the funeral, where they reconnect with Wendy’s former boyfriend Horry Callen, played by Timothy Olyphant, who suffered a brain injury years earlier, and his mother Linda, portrayed by Debra Monk. Wendy, unhappy in her marriage to the workaholic Barry, portrayed by Aaron Lazar, feels neglected.
Judd reunites with his older brother Paul, played by Corey Stoll, and Paul’s wife Annie, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn, who was once Judd’s girlfriend. The youngest brother Phillip, played by Adam Driver, arrives late with his new, older girlfriend Tracy, portrayed by Connie Britton. Their mother Hilary, played by Jane Fonda, reveals that despite being an atheist, their father wished for them to sit shiva, overseen by their childhood friend, Rabbi Charles “Boner” Grodner, depicted by Ben Schwartz. Wendy is the only family member aware of Judd’s marital struggles.
During the gathering, Wendy pushes Judd to disclose the truth about Quinn. Phillip expresses frustration over being labeled the family’s failure, while flirting with another woman in Tracy’s presence. Judd eventually reveals that Quinn cheated on him, and he plans to divorce her. Quinn later arrives, revealing she is pregnant with Judd’s child, a secret Phillip shares with the family.
Judd spends time with Penny Moore, played by Rose Byrne, a woman who had a crush on him in high school. Wendy visits Horry, expressing guilt over causing the accident that led to his brain injury. At the temple, the brothers sneak out to smoke joints found in their father’s suit. Annie, upset about her inability to conceive, attempts to seduce Judd, but he rejects her. Later, after Barry departs for a conference, Wendy reconnects with Horry, with whom she remains in love.
