Description: Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam is a 2021 Malayalam film directed by Senna Hegde, who has a unique background being half Malayali and half Kannadiga. Growing up in Kerala but attending school in Karnataka, Senna is not entirely fluent in either Malayalam or Kannada. However, his connection to Kerala is stronger, as he was deeply influenced by the Malayalam cinema of the 80s and 90s. This influence is evident in his film, Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam, which received two awards at the Kerala State Film Awards: Best Second Film and Best Story. Senna credits filmmaker Balachandran Menon as one of his major inspirations.
When Senna wrote the script, he envisioned it as a Malayalam film, incorporating the local dialect of his hometown, Kanhangad. However, due to his long-standing collaboration with producer Pushkara Mallikarjunaiah, who supported his earlier Kannada film Katheyondu Shuruvagide, Senna shared the story with him. Pushkara suggested making the film in Kannada, given the universal theme of the story. Despite initial attempts to adapt the script to Kannada, Senna felt it wasn’t working and decided to stick with his original plan of making it in Malayalam.
The story reflects Senna’s personal experiences and his connection to his roots, blending the cultural nuances of Kerala with a narrative that resonates universally. The film’s success highlights Senna’s ability to balance his dual heritage while staying true to his cinematic vision.
