Description: “Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru” (translated as “The Warrior: Chapter One”), often referred to simply as “Theeran,” is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film. Written and directed by H. Vinoth, the movie was produced by S. R. Prakashbabu and S. R. Prabhu under the Dream Warrior Pictures banner. Inspired by the Operation Bawaria case, the film portrays the criminal activities of dacoits and shows how the Tamil Nadu Police, led by DGP S. R. Jangid, successfully tackled the menace.
The movie stars Karthi in the lead role as Theeran, a character modeled after Jangid, alongside Rakul Preet Singh and Abhimanyu Singh, who plays the primary antagonist. Vinoth began developing the script based on the real-life incident even before his debut film “Sathuranga Vettai” (2014) but officially started working on it in late 2014. To ensure authenticity, he conducted extensive research by meeting with police officers who had handled similar cases.
Principal filming began in January 2017 and concluded in July of the same year. The team shot in various real locations across Chennai and North India to capture the essence of the events. Cinematography was handled by Sathyan Sooryan, editing by Sivanandeeswaran, and the soundtrack and film score were composed by Ghibran.
Released worldwide on 17 November 2017, “Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru” was distributed and co-produced by Reliance Entertainment. It received widespread critical acclaim for its direction, screenplay, cinematography, music, and performances, particularly Karthi’s portrayal. The film’s realistic depiction of the Tamil Nadu Police and its gripping narrative were highly praised.
Commercially, the film was a success, grossing ₹96 crore. It won several awards, including Ananda Vikatan Cinema Awards and Techofes awards, as well as two Edison and Vijay awards each. It also received nominations at the South Indian International Movie Awards and Filmfare Awards, with Karthi winning Best Tamil Actor (Critics). Notably, *Film Companion* ranked it among the “25 Greatest Tamil Films of the Decade” and included Karthi’s performance in their list of “100 Greatest Performances of the Decade.”
