**Storyline:**
In the northeastern Chinese city of Yanji, located in Yanbian Prefecture, Gu-nam, an ethnic Korean also known as Joseonjok, works hard as a taxi driver. When he’s not driving, he often spends his time at gambling halls. Struggling with serious debt, Gu-nam’s situation worsens when his wife leaves for South Korea, promising to send money back home. However, he hasn’t heard from her since her departure and is haunted by nightmares of her being unfaithful. To add to his troubles, Gu-nam loses his job, and debt collectors seize most of his severance pay.
A local gangster, Myun Jung-hak, offers Gu-nam a risky deal: if he travels to South Korea to assassinate a professor named Kim Seung-hyun, he will receive CN¥57,000 (approximately US$10,000). Desperate, Gu-nam agrees and sets off for South Korea by train and a dilapidated fishing boat, carrying only US$500 for expenses.
Upon arriving in South Korea, Gu-nam carefully observes his target while searching for his wife. On the night before his scheduled return to China, he witnesses Kim Seung-hyun being ambushed and killed by his driver and an accomplice within the apartment building’s stairwell. Gu-nam manages to fend off the driver and cuts off Seung-hyun’s thumb as per Myun’s contract. However, he is spotted by Seung-hyun’s wife and forced to flee from the police. When he reaches the planned location for his return trip to China, no one is there to pick him up, and he realizes he’s been betrayed.
It is later revealed that a businessman named Kim Tae-won orchestrated Seung-hyun’s murder and now directs his gang to eliminate Gu-nam. After discovering that Gu-nam was hired by Myun, Tae-won sends his men to China to kill Myun, but Myun survives and returns to South Korea to confront Tae-won. The two strike a deal, with Tae-won promising to pay Myun for locating and killing Gu-nam.
