Description: “The Worst Person in the World,” a 2021 dark romantic comedy-drama, was directed by Joachim Trier and is the third installment in his “Oslo Trilogy,” following “Reprise” and “Oslo, 31 August.” The film made its debut at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, where Renate Reinsve received the Best Actress award for her performance. It was also Norway’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 94th Academy Awards, earning a spot on the December shortlist.
The story follows Julie, a medical student in Oslo who undergoes a sudden change of heart and switches her focus to psychology. Later, inspired by her phone’s camera roll, she decides to become a photographer. During a night out with her first boyfriend, she meets Aksel Willman, a well-known comic artist 15 years her senior. Despite their age difference, the two quickly bond and start a relationship.
While spending a weekend at Aksel’s parents’ house, Aksel brings up the idea of starting a family, but Julie expresses hesitations about her readiness. One morning, she observes Aksel engaging with his nieces and nephews, which leaves her reflective.
After attending a publishing event for Aksel, Julie stumbles upon a party and decides to join. There, she meets Eivind, a barista. Both are in relationships but spend the night together, sharing personal details without crossing physical boundaries. They exchange first names but make no plans to meet again.
Julie later writes a blog post about her preferences regarding oral sex, which Aksel encourages her to share online. The post gains modest attention. As Julie turns 30, she celebrates her birthday at her mother’s home, surrounded by Aksel and her grandmother.
