Description: “The World to Come” (2021) is a captivating drama set in 1856 in Schoharie County. The story follows Abigail and Dyer, a couple dealing with the tragic loss of their young daughter, Nellie, while leading a solitary life as farmers. Their routine changes when a new childless couple moves nearby. Abigail is quickly drawn to Tallie, the wife, and the two women form a profound bond.
Abigail confesses to Tallie that her marriage to Dyer is practical rather than romantic, while Tallie reveals her husband Finney is often controlling and prone to arguments. On Abigail’s birthday, Tallie gifts her an atlas she had long desired. Shortly after, Tallie is caught in a life-threatening storm, and her husband takes her away to recover.
When Tallie returns in the spring, she resumes her visits to Abigail. Eventually, Tallie admits she dreams of being with Abigail, and the two share a kiss, beginning a secret affair. Both their husbands grow increasingly unhappy with the time the women spend together.
During a tense dinner hosted by Finney, he brings up the couple’s lost child, and Abigail notices bruises on Tallie’s neck. Afterward, Tallie stops visiting. Abigail searches for her only to find her house empty, with a bloody kerchief left behind. Later, she receives a letter from Tallie stating she has moved 85 miles away.
Abigail insists on visiting Tallie, and Dyer reluctantly agrees. Upon arrival, they discover Tallie has died, with Finney claiming the cause was diphtheria. Abigail returns to her farm life, growing more distant from Dyer. To cope, she imagines a future where she avenges Tallie and envisions both Nellie and Tallie finding peace in the afterlife.
