Description: Clayton Hammond (Dennis Quaid) attends a public reading of his latest book, *The Words*. As he begins reading, the story shifts to a fictional character named Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper), an aspiring writer living in New York City with his girlfriend, Dora (Zoe Saldana). Rory borrows money from his father (J. K. Simmons), secures a job as a mail supervisor at a literary agency, and tries to publish his first novel, which faces repeated rejections.
After marrying Dora, the couple honeymoons in Paris, where Dora buys Rory an antique briefcase he admired. Upon returning to America, Rory discovers an old, brilliantly written manuscript inside the briefcase. Intrigued, he types it into his laptop, pretending to experience the feeling of creating something extraordinary. Dora stumbles upon the novel, mistakenly believing Rory wrote it, and encourages him to submit it to a publisher. The manuscript is accepted, propelling Rory to fame.
Meanwhile, Hammond pauses the reading to meet Daniella (Olivia Wilde), a student and aspiring writer who requests an interview. Hammond agrees and returns to the stage to continue the story of *The Words*.
