**Storyline:**
Police Sergeant Neil Howie travels by seaplane to the remote Hebridean island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl named Rowan Morrison, prompted by an anonymous letter. As a devout Christian, Howie is deeply unsettled by the islanders’ pagan practices, which include worshipping ancient Celtic deities, engaging in open sexual acts in fields, involving children in May Day rituals, and using unconventional remedies like placing toads in their mouths to cure sore throats. The islanders, including Rowan’s own mother, seem determined to obstruct his investigation by denying Rowan’s existence.

During his stay at the Green Man Inn, Howie notices a series of photographs from past harvest celebrations, each featuring a young girl as the May Queen. However, the most recent photo is missing, with the landlord claiming it was broken. Willow, the landlord’s daughter, attempts to seduce Howie, but he resists despite his inner conflict. At the local school, Howie questions the students and teacher about Rowan but is met with denials. He discovers Rowan’s name in the school register and learns of her supposed burial plot.

Upon visiting the grave, Howie seeks permission from the island’s leader, Lord Summerisle, to exhume the body. Summerisle reveals that his grandfather, a Victorian agronomist, developed fruit tree varieties suited to Scotland’s climate and encouraged the islanders to embrace pagan beliefs, believing the old gods would bless their harvests. Over generations, the islanders fully adopted this pagan religion.
