Description: “The Voices” (2014) is a psychological thriller that tells the story of Jerry, a man working at a bathtub factory and living in an apartment above a bowling alley. Jerry suffers from schizophrenia but opts not to take his medication, leading to hallucinations where his dog, Bosco, and cat, Mr. Whiskers, speak to him. Bosco embodies Jerry’s good intentions, while Mr. Whiskers reflects his darker, violent side.
Jerry develops a crush on his coworker Fiona and invites her to a date at a Chinese dinner theater called Shi Shen. Although she agrees, Fiona stands him up to attend a karaoke party with colleagues Lisa and Alison. Later, when Fiona’s car fails to start, she encounters Jerry, who offers her a ride home. During the drive, Jerry hits a deer, which crashes through the windshield. In his hallucination, the deer pleads for mercy, prompting Jerry to kill it.
Fleeing in fear, Fiona runs into the woods, and Jerry, chasing her with the knife, accidentally stabs her. Overcome with guilt, Jerry apologizes and claims to love her before ending her suffering with another stab. Back home, Bosco urges Jerry to confess to the police, but Mr. Whiskers advises him to dispose of the body. Jerry dismembers Fiona, storing her severed head in the fridge and her organs in Tupperware containers.
As Jerry’s delusions intensify, Fiona’s head comes to life, criticizing him for ruining her life and demanding he take his medication. The film explores Jerry’s struggle with his mental illness and the consequences of his actions.
