Description: Residents of the small, isolated village of Covington, Pennsylvania, live in fear of mysterious creatures known as “Those We Don’t Speak Of,” which inhabit the surrounding woods. To protect themselves, the villagers have built a barrier of oil lanterns and watchtowers that are always manned. After a child’s funeral, Lucius Hunt asks the village Elders for permission to pass through the woods to fetch medicine from nearby towns, but his request is denied. His mother, Alice, also disapproves of his desire to visit the towns, which the villagers believe are wicked. The Elders harbor secrets and keep reminders of past tragedies in hidden boxes.
When Lucius defies the rules and enters the woods, the creatures respond by leaving red paint warnings on the villagers’ doors. Ivy Elizabeth Walker, the blind daughter of Chief Elder Edward Walker, confesses her love for Lucius, and they plan to marry. However, Noah Percy, a young man who is in love with Ivy as well, attacks Lucius in a fit of jealousy. Noah is subsequently confined as the community deliberates his fate.
Edward ultimately decides to let Ivy brave the forest to find medicine for Lucius. He reveals that the creatures are, in fact, their fellow villagers in costumes, maintaining the myth of monsters to scare people away from leaving. Ivy is sent into the forest with two young men, but they quickly abandon her out of fear. While navigating the woods, Ivy encounters one of the creatures and cleverly tricks it into falling into a deep pit, leading to its demise.
