Description: The story begins in 1845 in Banfield, Massachusetts, with the execution of a woman accused of witchcraft. Before her death, her spirit is trapped in a doll. Years later, Gerry Fenn, a journalist who specializes in reporting on bizarre and supernatural events, investigates strange occurrences in Boston. After uncovering a teenage prank, he discovers the doll and accidentally crushes it, releasing the woman’s spirit. Driving away, Gerry has an accident after seeing a young girl, Alice, run across the road. He follows her to a tree, where he hears her speak before she collapses.
At the hospital, Gerry learns that Alice is deaf-mute and couldn’t have spoken. Intrigued, he decides to stay in town to investigate what he believes could be a genuine story. The next day, Alice shocks the community by speaking and claiming the Virgin Mary cured her. This sparks a media frenzy, especially as more seemingly miraculous healings occur.
The Catholic Church sends Monsignor Delgarde and Bishop Gyles to investigate. Gerry befriends Alice, discovering that the “Mary” she communicates with may not be the religious figure she assumes. Gerry and Father Hagan, who was healed by Alice but suspects the true nature of the miracles, grow wary. They uncover the story of Mary Elnor, the woman from the prologue. Mary had sold her soul to Satan for eternal life and power, allowing her and her descendants, including Alice, to perform “miracles” to lure people into pledging themselves to Satan.
