**StoryLine:**
The film opens with a quote from the Book of Job 38:4-7: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the Earth?… When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” A mysterious, flame-like light flickers in the darkness. Mrs. O’Brien reflects on the choice between following the path of nature or grace.
In the 1960s, Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien learn of the death of their 19-year-old son, R.L., which throws the family into chaos. By 2010, their eldest son, Jack, struggles with disillusionment in his life as an architect, haunted by his past. Mrs. O’Brien questions God about R.L.’s death, followed by visuals depicting the birth of the universe, the formation of Earth, and the evolution of life, from microbes to dinosaurs. A pivotal moment shows a dinosaur sparing the life of another injured dinosaur. The sequence ends with an asteroid striking Earth.
Set in a suburban neighborhood in Waco, Texas, the story focuses on the O’Brien family. The young couple is captivated by their newborn son, Jack, and later his brothers, R.L. and Stevie. As Jack grows older, he grapples with the conflict between grace and nature, as represented by his parents.
