Description: The Time Machine is a film centered around Alex Hartdegen, a scientist living in New York City in 1899. Driven by his obsession with time travel, he serves as a professor of Applied Mechanics and Engineering at Columbia University, often facing criticism for his unconventional theories. He also corresponds with Albert Einstein.
One day, while heading to the park to meet his girlfriend Emma, Alex is distracted by an early motor car near the park gates. He quickly gains the driver’s gratitude by activating the parking brake, preventing the car from going out of control. Later, he meets Emma at the skating rink, and they stroll through the park where Alex proposes to her. However, their romantic moment is shattered when a robber emerges from the bushes, brandishing a gun. In the ensuing struggle to protect Emma’s engagement ring, the gun fires, fatally wounding her. Devastated by her death, Alex dedicates the next four years to relentless work in his laboratory, striving to perfect a time machine.
His obsession isolates him from his closest friend, David Philby, who attempts to reconnect and encourage Alex to return to a normal life. Alex, however, remains focused on his mission. After completing the time machine, he travels back four years to prevent Emma’s death. Despite successfully diverting her from the park and the robber, fate intervenes when Emma is tragically trampled by a horse and carriage, spooked by the same motor car Alex had encountered earlier.
This poignant tale explores themes of loss, obsession, and the relentless pursuit of altering the past, ultimately revealing the futility of trying to change destiny.
