**Plot Summary:**
In Antarctica, a Norwegian helicopter chases a sled dog to an American research station. The Americans witness the passenger accidentally detonate the helicopter and himself. The Norwegian pilot, armed with a rifle, shouts at the Americans, but they fail to understand him, leading to his shooting in self-defense by station commander Garry. R.J. MacReady, the American helicopter pilot, and Dr. Copper investigate the Norwegian base. Among the wreckage and frozen bodies, they discover the charred remains of a deformed humanoid, which they bring back to the American station.
Blair, the station’s biologist, conducts autopsies and finds human organs within the remains. Clark, another team member, keeps the sled dog in the kennel, where it transforms and absorbs the other dogs. This chaos alerts the team, and Childs uses a flamethrower to destroy the creature. Blair’s autopsy reveals the creature’s ability to perfectly mimic other organisms. Norwegian data leads the team to an excavation site containing a partially buried alien spacecraft and a smaller, human-sized dig. Norris estimates the spacecraft has been buried for over 100,000 years. Blair becomes increasingly paranoid, fearing the creature could assimilate all life on Earth within years. The station implements strict measures to prevent assimilation.
The deformed humanoid creature assimilates Bennings, but the process is interrupted by Windows, and MacReady incinerates the assimilated Bennings-Thing. Blair, driven to desperation, sabotages the vehicles, kills the remaining sled dogs, and destroys the radio to prevent any escape. The team locks him in a tool shed. Dr. Copper proposes a blood test to identify contamination, but when the blood stores are found destroyed, trust in Garry dwindles, and MacReady assumes command.
