Description: In 1928, Arthur Spiderwick completes a field guide documenting the fairies he has encountered. Fearing the evil intentions of Mulgarath, a shapeshifting ogre who seeks to exploit the book’s secrets, Arthur hides it away. Eighty years later, Helen Grace, recently divorced, inherits and moves into the abandoned Spiderwick estate with her children: daughter Mallory and twin sons Jared and Simon. Jared, upset about the move, stumbles upon Arthur’s study and discovers the hidden field guide. When he shares his findings with his family, they dismiss his claims.
The next day, Jared encounters Thimbletack, a brownie entrusted with protecting the book. Thimbletack is furious with Jared for uncovering it but is appeased with crackers and honey. He gives Jared a special stone that allows him to see invisible fairies. Jared learns about a protective mushroom circle around the house and witnesses Simon being kidnapped by goblins led by Redcap.
Simon is taken to Mulgarath, disguised as an old man, who demands the book. Jared meets Hogsqueal, a hobgoblin, who grants him the ability to see fairies without the stone in exchange for his help in avenging his family’s death at Mulgarath’s hands. Simon is released to retrieve the book, leading to a confrontation between the brothers. Escaping the goblins with Mallory’s help, the siblings return to the safety of their home.
