Description: The Spectacular Now is a 2013 film that follows the story of Sutter Keely, a charismatic and popular 18-year-old high school senior. Sutter spends most of his time partying and drinking. After his girlfriend, Cassidy Roy, ends their relationship, Sutter reacts by getting heavily drunk and wakes up the next morning on a stranger’s lawn. There, he meets Aimee Finecky, a classmate he doesn’t recognize, who is in the middle of her mother’s paper route.
Sutter joins Aimee to find his car and later asks her to tutor him in geometry. As they spend time together, he discovers that she is intelligent, humorous, and passionate about sci-fi and comics. Inspired by her, Sutter deletes a college application essay he had written about his breakup being his life’s greatest hardship.
The two attend a party, where they share drinks and a walk. Aimee opens up about her struggles, admitting she’s never been drunk, never had a boyfriend, and feels unable to pursue college because she cares for her mother. Sutter reassures her and they share a kiss.
The next day, Sutter realizes he asked Aimee to prom and begins to feel conflicted. He avoids her at school and visits Cassidy instead. Despite reminiscing, Cassidy makes it clear they have no future together. Later, after being warned not to hurt Aimee, Sutter takes her to dinner at his sister’s house. There, Aimee candidly discusses her late father’s death from an overdose and her hopes for an ideal marriage.
The film explores themes of self-discovery, relationships, and personal growth as Sutter and Aimee navigate their connection and challenges.
