Description: Maria, a spirited young Austrian woman, trains to become a nun at Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg in 1938. Her carefree nature and lack of discipline raise concerns, prompting the Mother Abbess to send her to work as a governess for Captain Georg von Trapp’s seven children—Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta, and Gretl. Following the death of his wife, the Captain raises his children with strict military rules. Though the children initially misbehave, Maria’s kindness and patience win their trust and respect.
While the Captain is away in Vienna, Maria sews play clothes for the children from old drapes and takes them on adventures around Salzburg and the nearby mountains, teaching them to sing. Upon the Captain’s return with Baroness Elsa Schraeder and their friend Max Detweiler, they find Maria and the children returning from a boat ride that ends with the boat capsizing. Displeased by their appearance and activities, the Captain orders Maria to leave. However, upon hearing his children sing for the Baroness, he is moved emotionally and joins them, marking the first time he has sung in years. He apologizes to Maria and asks her to stay.
Impressed by the children’s singing, Max suggests they perform at the Salzburg Festival, but the Captain refuses, as he does not allow public singing. Instead, he agrees to host a grand party at the villa. During the event, while guests dance in formal attire, Maria and the children watch from the garden terrace.
