Description: Peter Miller, played by Hugh Jackman, is navigating life with his second wife, Beth, portrayed by Vanessa Kirby, as they raise their newborn child. His world is disrupted when his ex-wife, Kate, played by Laura Dern, informs him that their 17-year-old son, Nicholas, has become deeply depressed and left school. Despite having a distant relationship with his son, Peter agrees to take Nicholas in. Peter’s own troubled relationship with his father, Anthony Hopkins’ character, who was often absent or cruel, weighs on him. Determined to break the cycle, Peter strives to be a better father to Nicholas.
However, Peter remains unaware of the emotional toll his past actions, particularly his infidelity with Beth, have taken on Nicholas. Tensions rise when Peter discovers that Nicholas has been skipping school since moving in. Tragedy strikes when Nicholas attempts suicide, leading to his placement in a treatment facility. Overcome with guilt, Peter and Kate decide to bring Nicholas home after he expresses regret over his actions.
Back at home, Nicholas appears to be improving, even preparing tea for his parents and discussing future plans, including a family movie night. Yet, in a devastating turn of events, Nicholas takes his own life. In the aftermath, Peter is left to grapple with his grief and imagine what life could have been like had Nicholas survived.
