Description: The Silencing is a 2020 thriller film that follows the story of Rayburn Swanson, an alcoholic who owns the Gwen Swanson Sanctuary, named after his missing daughter. The sanctuary serves as his penance, as Gwen disapproved of his trapper lifestyle and vanished from his car five years earlier while he was buying whiskey. Rayburn uses surveillance cameras to keep hunters out of the sanctuary.
Sheriff Alice Gustafson, whose brother Brooks is troubled, investigates the body of a young girl found by a lake. She notices a scar on the girl’s throat and discovers a spearhead marked with “MB” embedded in a tree. Rayburn arrives to identify the body, but it is not Gwen. Alice learns the spear was used with a rare weapon called an atlatl.
While investigating, Rayburn encounters a man in a ghillie suit stalking the woods. The man wounds Rayburn with a spear, but Rayburn escapes and spots a black pickup truck with no license plates. He marks the truck by scratching an “x” on the fender. Back home, reviewing his surveillance footage, Rayburn sees a girl being hunted by the same man in the sanctuary. He rescues the girl, Molly, who has a throat scar similar to the dead girl’s, and keeps her safe in an unused spike trap overnight.
The next day, Rayburn and Molly return to his cabin but are ambushed by the hunter. Determined to end the threat, Rayburn discards his liquor except for an unopened bottle he bought on the day Gwen disappeared. He locates the marked truck and breaks into a house, where he finds weapons, clothes used by the killer, and “missing” posters, including one for his daughter. Discovering a girl still alive with a surgically cut throat, Rayburn is captured and knocked unconscious by the killer.
