**Storyline:**
Jack Torrance, a writer, arrives at the secluded Overlook Hotel in the Rocky Mountains for an interview to become the winter caretaker. Built in 1909 on a Native American burial ground, the hotel shuts down during the snowy season. Jack hopes to use the isolation to focus on his writing. Although manager Stuart Ullman warns him about the hotel’s dark history, including a previous caretaker who killed his family and himself, Jack takes the job.
In Boulder, Jack’s son, Danny, has a troubling vision about the hotel. Jack’s wife, Wendy, shares with a doctor that Danny has an imaginary friend named Tony. She also reveals that Jack is a recovering alcoholic who once harmed Danny during a drunken episode.
After moving into the hotel, the family meets Dick Hallorann, the head chef, who surprises Danny by telepathically offering him ice cream. Hallorann explains that he and his grandmother shared this ability, which he calls “shining.” He warns Danny that the hotel has its own “shine” and memories, advising him to avoid room 237.
As winter progresses, Jack’s writing stalls, and his mental state deteriorates, leading to violent outbursts. Meanwhile, Danny experiences terrifying visions, and Wendy discovers that the phone lines are down due to heavy snowfall. Curiosity gets the better of Danny when he sees the door to room 237 open. Later, Wendy finds Jack screaming in his sleep at his typewriter. When she wakes him, he admits to dreaming about killing her and Danny. Shortly after, Danny arrives, visibly shaken and bruised, prompting Wendy to accuse Jack of abuse, which he denies.
