Description: In post-World War II America, Maja Reid, a Romanian refugee, has rebuilt her life with her American husband, Lewis, and their young son, Patrick. Despite her efforts to move on, she remains haunted by traumatic memories of the war, plagued by recurring nightmares. One day, while walking down the street, Maja spots a man she believes to be a former German soldier she encountered 15 years earlier. She follows him to his home, where she discovers he has a wife and two children. The next day, under the pretense of car trouble, Maja knocks him out and locks him in the trunk of her car.
When she returns home, Maja confides in Lewis about her past, recalling how she and other women fled to Romania during the war, only to be found by SS soldiers who murdered some of them. She admits that she has captured the man, believing him to be a Nazi war criminal, and hidden him in their car. This revelation leaves Lewis deeply unsettled. Together, they take the man to their basement and restrain him in a chair.
Maja interrogates the captive, who insists his name is Thomas Steinmann and that he is Swiss. Maja disputes his claims, accusing him of being a man named Karl and recounting his alleged war crimes. When Thomas attempts to escape and shouts for help, Lewis subdues him. The commotion attracts the attention of a neighbor, Jim, but Maja convinces him that the noise came from the street. The next day, accompanied by the police and Thomas’s wife, Rachel, the neighbor searches the area for the source of the screams.
At his clinic, Lewis investigates Thomas’s background and finds documents confirming his Swiss origins. Meanwhile, at home, Thomas continues to deny Maja’s accusations until she forces him to utter a phrase that triggers her memories of the past.
The story revolves around Maja’s struggle to confront her trauma and the moral dilemmas faced by both her and Lewis as they grapple with the consequences of her actions.
