Description: “The Secret of Kells,” released in 2009, tells a captivating story set in 9th century Ireland during the Viking Age. The film follows Brendan, a curious and courageous boy living in the Abbey of Kells under the guardianship of his strict uncle, Abbot Cellach. The Abbot is focused on constructing a protective wall around the Abbey to shield it from Viking raids.
As a young apprentice in the monastery’s scriptorium, Brendan becomes intrigued by tales of Brother Aidan, the creator of the legendary Book of Iona. Aidan, who arrives at Kells with his white cat, Pangur Bán, after his monastery is destroyed, is working on the unfinished Book of Kells—a manuscript said to “turn darkness into light.” Brendan’s curiosity leads him to sneak into the scriptorium, where he discovers the sacred book guarded by Pangur Bán. Recognizing Brendan’s potential, Aidan takes him under his wing and sends him into the forest to gather materials for making ink.
During his journey, Brendan encounters danger but is rescued by Aisling, a fairy who initially distrusts him. After learning of Brendan’s mission to aid in creating the book, Aisling befriends him and helps him face the terrifying deity Crom Cruach. Despite their harrowing encounter, Brendan returns to the monastery, only to be reprimanded by his uncle, who forbids him from leaving again.
As Brendan continues working with Aidan, they face a new challenge: the loss of the ‘Eye of Colm Cille,’ a vital tool for their work. Determined to retrieve it, Brendan attempts to venture back into Crom’s cave, but his uncle confines him to his room, putting their mission at risk.”
