Death is inevitable, but in modern society, with advancements in medical knowledge and technology, it rarely comes suddenly or unexpectedly. As Justice Marie L. Garibaldi of the New Jersey Supreme Court noted, questions of fate have now become questions of choice. Today, individuals have the right to consent to or refuse medical treatment, a decision guided by the legal doctrine of informed consent. This allows patients to choose their preferred medical care after understanding the potential consequences. However, the ethical dilemma arises when technology can sustain life—does a person have the right to die under such circumstances?
Many advocate for voluntary euthanasia, which involves assisting those who cannot act on their own to refuse treatment. Living wills and advance directives address this scenario. Others go further, supporting active euthanasia, where assistance is provided to end someone’s life. On the opposing side, some argue that both voluntary and active euthanasia violate the sanctity of life, believing only God should decide when a person dies.
*The Sea Inside*, directed by Alejandro Amenábar, is Spain’s entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards. The screenplay is based on the true story of quadriplegic Ramón Sampedro, who fought for his right to die. For 28 years, he (played by Javier Bardem) remained bedridden, cared for by Manuela (Mabel Rivera), the compassionate wife of his brother José (Celso Bugallo), in their rural home in Galicia. The film explores his struggle to convince the courts of his right to end his life.
