Storyline:
Long before the era of the pyramids, a fierce army from the East, led by the merciless Memnon, invades and overcomes local tribes. Memnon’s rule is established by law as he is their greatest warrior. His conquests are aided by a powerful sorcerer who predicts the outcomes of battles, leaving only a few tribes to resist him.
Mathayus, his half-brother Jesup, and their friend Rama, the last of the Akkadians, are hired by King Pheron of the free tribes to assassinate Memnon’s sorcerer in exchange for twenty blood rubies. This deal angers Pheron’s son Takmet, as the rubies are the last of their treasury, and Nubian King Balthazar, who dislikes the Akkadians. The trio infiltrates Memnon’s camp but is ambushed by his guards, betrayed by Takmet, who has killed his father and joined Memnon. Jesup and Rama are fatally struck by arrows, but Mathayus reaches the sorcerer’s tent, discovering the sorcerer is actually a woman named Cassandra. Mathayus is captured and meets Memnon, who executes Jesup but spares Takmet. Cassandra warns Memnon against killing Mathayus, claiming the gods wish him to survive the night, and defying them could cost his victories. Memnon buries Mathayus in the desert to be killed by fire ants at dawn, but Mathayus escapes with the help of a thief named Arpid.
Determined to avenge his brother and complete his mission, Mathayus infiltrates Memnon’s stronghold, Gomorrah, and enters the palace with the aid of a street urchin. He encounters Philos, Memnon’s sympathetic court magician, who hides him and guides him to the courtyard where Memnon trains. Mathayus attempts to assassinate Memnon from a watchtower but is forced to save the street urchin from punishment, alerting the guards to his presence.
