Description: “The School for Good and Evil,” a 2022 fantasy film directed by Paul Feig, is based on the 2013 novel by Soman Chainani. The screenplay was co-written by David Magee and Feig. The movie features a star-studded cast including Sophia Anne Caruso, Sofia Wylie, Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Flatters, Kit Young, Peter Serafinowicz, Kerry Washington, and Charlize Theron.
Originally set for release by Universal Pictures, the rights were acquired by Netflix in 2020. Filming began in early 2021 in Belfast, and the movie premiered on October 19, 2022.
The story follows best friends Sophie and Agatha, who are abducted and taken to the School for Good and Evil. When their destinies are unexpectedly reversed, they must navigate challenges to find their way back home, testing the strength of their friendship in the process.
The journey to bring this story to the screen began in 2011 when studios first considered adapting The School for Good and Evil series. After the first book’s publication in 2013, Roth Films and Jane Startz Productions secured the rights to produce the film. Universal Pictures won the auction for the project with a significant deal, appointing producers Roth, Startz, and Palak Patel. Soman Chainani and Malia Scotch Marmo were tasked with writing the screenplay, completing the initial drafts by July 2015.
However, the project faced delays and remained in development limbo until Netflix acquired the rights in 2017. A new team, including screenwriters David Magee and Laura Solon, was brought on board. Netflix’s focus on expanding its library of live-action family films played a key role in reviving the project.
Director Paul Feig was initially hesitant to take on the film due to its departure from his usual style and the unfamiliar genre. However, after reading the script, he was drawn to the engaging characters, compelling story, and the opportunity for extensive world-building.
“The School for Good and Evil” stands as a testament to Netflix’s ambition to create films that resonate with audiences of all ages, bringing this beloved fantasy tale to life.”
