### Storyline:
Set in 1667 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, tensions simmer between the Puritans and their Algonquian neighbors. Chief Metacomet takes over leadership from his father, Massasoit, just as Hester Prynne arrives from England. While awaiting her husband, Roger Prynne, who is expected to follow soon, Hester develops a relationship with a young minister, Arthur Dimmesdale. When Roger is presumed killed by Native Americans, Hester and Dimmesdale become lovers.
After becoming pregnant with Dimmesdale’s child, Hester is imprisoned for her affair. Dimmesdale plans to confess his sin and face execution, but Hester persuades him otherwise. She is sentenced to wear a scarlet “A” for adultery, marking her as an outcast, and is constantly followed by a drummer boy in town. Meanwhile, Roger resurfaces, having been held captive as a prisoner of war. Upon learning of Hester’s actions, he disguises himself as “Dr. Roger Chillingworth” and begins searching for her lover.
Chillingworth eventually murders a settler leaving Hester’s home and scalps him to blame the Algonquians. This act incites the colonists to declare war on the Native Americans. Overwhelmed by the consequences of his actions, Roger commits suicide. During the ensuing chaos, Hester is nearly hanged alongside other outcasts, but Dimmesdale saves her by confessing he is the father of her child. As he takes her place on the gallows, the Algonquians attack the colony, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. With the Puritans focused on hiding the conflict from England, Hester removes her scarlet letter and leaves with Dimmesdale for Carolina.
