Description: **The Rum Diary (2011)**
Paul Kemp, a struggling author, takes a job at a newspaper in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There, he befriends Sala, who warns him about the paper’s uncertain future. Kemp settles into a hotel and encounters Chenault, a woman skinny-dipping to escape a Union Carbide party. He is instantly drawn to her.
Kemp and Sala embark on a drinking spree, earning them the disapproval of their editor, Lotterman. Kemp also meets Moburg, a fellow reporter who seems impossible to fire. Through his work, Kemp crosses paths with Sanderson, a real estate agent engaged to Chenault. Sanderson offers Kemp a side job writing advertisements for his latest project.
When Kemp moves in with Sala and Moburg, he witnesses the poverty of San Juan. However, Lotterman discourages him from writing about it, fearing it could harm tourism. Meanwhile, Moburg returns with leftover filters from a rum plant, which contain potent alcohol. After being fired, Moburg vents his anger, threatening Lotterman.
Kemp later spies on Sanderson and Chenault during an intimate moment in the sea. He becomes involved with Zimburger and Segarra, who seek his help in a real estate scheme. After a confrontation at a restaurant, Kemp and Sala are arrested but bailed out by Sanderson.
The following day, Kemp learns about a deal involving prime real estate leased by the US military. He is tasked with picking up Chenault, and the two share a brief but restrained connection. Kemp and Sala are then taken to St. Thomas for Carnival, where Kemp reunites with Chenault on Sanderson’s boat.
