Description: The Ruins (2008) is a gripping thriller following two young American couples, Jeff and Amy, along with Eric and Stacy, vacationing in Mexico. They encounter Mathias, a German tourist searching for his brother Heinrich, who was last seen at a remote Mayan archaeological site in the jungle. Joined by Mathias’s friend, Dimitri, the group ventures to the ruins of a Mayan temple. Upon arrival, they are met by armed Mayan villagers who react aggressively when Amy steps on some vines while taking photos. Dimitri attempts to calm the villagers but is tragically killed, forcing the group to flee up the temple steps.
At the top, they discover an abandoned camp and a central shaft. Unable to call for help due to poor signal, they hear a cell phone ringing from within the ruins. Believing it might be Heinrich’s phone, the group lowers Mathias into the shaft with a rope. However, the rope snaps, leaving Mathias paralyzed. Amy and Jeff try to negotiate with the Mayans but fail. In frustration, Amy throws a clump of vines at the villagers, accidentally hitting a young boy, who is swiftly killed by the Mayans. The group realizes the villagers fear the vines and refuse to let them leave since they’ve been exposed to them.
Later, Stacy and Amy descend the shaft to assist Mathias and locate the phone. Jeff and Eric fashion a backboard to retrieve Mathias. The next morning, Stacy discovers a vine has infiltrated her leg wound, while the vines have consumed Mathias’s lower legs down to the bone. Jeff and Eric manage to remove the vines from Stacy but cannot free Mathias, leaving the group in a desperate fight for survival.
