Description: Royal Tenenbaum informs his three teenage children, Chas, Margot, and Richie, about his separation from their mother, Etheline. Each child had shown remarkable talent from a young age: Chas excelled in math and business, Margot earned a grant for her playwriting in ninth grade, and Richie was a tennis prodigy and artist who expressed his feelings for Margot through his paintings. Royal often took Richie on outings, excluding the others. Their neighbor, Eli Cash, was Richie’s closest friend.
Two decades later, Royal is evicted from his hotel, while the children face struggles after their early successes. Richie travels the world following a personal breakdown and confesses his love for Margot in a letter to Eli. Chas becomes overly protective of his sons after the tragic loss of his wife in a plane crash. Margot, now married to neurologist Raleigh St. Clair, hides her smoking habits and past from him. Meanwhile, Raleigh studies a subject named Dudley Heinsbergen.
When Etheline’s accountant, Henry Sherman, proposes to her, Royal fabricates a story about having stomach cancer to regain his family’s attention. Etheline calls the children home, and Royal moves back in, setting up medical equipment in Richie’s room. Royal takes Chas’s sons on a risky outing, leading to a confrontation where Chas accuses Royal of endangering the boys and Royal criticizes Chas for being overly anxious.
Eli, who is having an affair with Margot, reveals Richie’s feelings for her. Royal discovers the affair and confronts Margot about her treatment of Raleigh. Suspecting Margot’s infidelity, Raleigh and Richie hire a private investigator to uncover the truth.
