**Storyline:**
Over five years after his successful directorial debut with *Firestorm*, Alan Yuen returns with *The Rookies*. Despite featuring Milla Jovovich in a significant role, the film struggled at the Chinese box office and seems unlikely to gain international traction. The story revolves around Zhao Feng (Darren Wang), a minor social media celebrity who gains fame by scaling skyscrapers in Hong Kong and live-streaming the stunts to his fans. During one such stunt, he accidentally parachutes into the midst of a dangerous transaction and is mistaken for a contact by a shady businessman (Chan Kwok Kwan).
After narrowly escaping the situation, Zhao is recruited by Bruce (Milla Jovovich), an elite agent from a secret organization known as the Order of the Phantom Knighthood. His mission is to impersonate the man he was earlier mistaken for and travel to Budapest to participate in a high-stakes transaction. The goal is to secure a devastating chemical weapon capable of transforming people into plants, preventing it from falling into the hands of Iron Fist (David McInnis), a madman aiming to create a new world order populated solely by “good people and plants.”
To achieve this, Zhao must first secure the Holy Grail, the real one, which is kept in a heavily guarded mansion. He is assisted by Miao Miao (Sandrine Pinna), an underperforming Interpol agent prone to uncontrollable anger, and Ding (Timmy Xu), a devoted fan and brilliant inventor.
The narrative unfolds in a chaotic, almost stream-of-consciousness manner, with minimal regard for logical progression. Subplots are introduced and abandoned randomly, resulting in a series of disjointed scenes rather than a cohesive film. The storyline jumps from one improbable event to another, such as a social media star accidentally parachuting into a criminal deal, being recruited to steal the Holy Grail, and collaborating with an Interpol agent and his fan to save the world.
