Description: In Seattle, two friends, Katie Embry and Becca Kotler, discuss a local legend about a cursed videotape that causes anyone who watches it to die seven days later. Katie reveals she watched the tape a week ago and is shortly after killed by an unseen force.
Following Katie’s funeral, her aunt Rachel Keller begins investigating her niece’s death. Rachel, who lives with her young son Aidan, discovers that Katie’s friends—Josh Turandot, Stacey Miller, and Scott Conduroy—also watched the tape and died the same night, all with disfigured appearances. Rachel visits the Shelter Mountain Inn, where Katie stayed, and finds the cursed tape. After watching it, she is haunted by disturbing images and receives a menacing phone call whispering, “seven days.”
Rachel enlists the help of her ex-boyfriend, Noah Clay, who is also Aidan’s father, to analyze the tape. He makes a copy after watching the original. As the days pass, Rachel experiences supernatural phenomena, including visions of a young girl with long, wet black hair. Her investigation leads her to Anna Morgan, a horse breeder from Moesko Island who committed suicide after her horses mysteriously drowned themselves. Rachel later discovers Aidan has also watched the tape, and Noah begins experiencing similar supernatural events.
Rachel travels to Moesko Island to meet Anna’s widower, Richard. During the ferry ride, a horse jumps to its death after being frightened by Rachel, echoing imagery from the cursed tape. Meanwhile, Noah visits Eola Psychiatric Hospital to review Anna’s medical records. Both Rachel and Noah uncover that Anna had an adopted daughter, Samara, who possessed the ability to psychically imprint mental images onto surfaces and into the minds of people and animals. When Rachel tries to question Richard about Samara, he denies her existence.
