Description: Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank) and her colleague Ben (Idris Elba) are investigators of miraculous claims. After returning from an expedition to a fictional, semi-wild version of Concepción, Chile, they examine the body of a priest who has remained perfectly preserved despite being dead for 40 years. They eventually discover that toxic waste played a role in preserving the corpse.
In Louisiana, Katherine receives a call from her friend, Father Michael Costigan (Stephen Rea), who informs her that photographs of her have developed burn marks that form a sickle-like symbol, potentially a divine warning. Katherine dismisses this and later meets Doug Blackwell (David Morrissey), a teacher from the nearby town of Haven. He requests her help in investigating why the town’s river has turned red. The locals attribute this to a biblical plague, blaming a girl named Loren McConnell (AnnaSophia Robb), whom they believe killed her older brother in the river.
Katherine and Ben travel to Haven and confirm the river’s eerie transformation. Along the way, they encounter the ruins of an old church, which Doug explains was destroyed a century ago by hurricanes, forcing the town to relocate. Meanwhile, Ben witnesses dead frogs seemingly raining from the sky. The locals’ unease grows as strange occurrences continue.
That night, Doug invites Katherine and Ben to stay at his house, where he reveals he comes from a long line of only children. During dinner, their food becomes rotted and infested with flies almost instantly. The following day, they receive a call to visit a nearby farm, where cows are dying of an unknown disease. Ben begins to wonder if these events have biblical origins, but Katherine remains skeptical.
The farm owner shares unsettling information about the McConnell family, claiming that they were visited by individuals who appeared to be Satan worshippers and may have participated in sacrifices. Later, Katherine confides in Doug about her past, explaining that she was once an ordained minister. Five years earlier, while doing missionary work in Sudan with her husband and daughter, her family was sacrificed by locals who blamed them for a drought.
As Katherine grapples with her haunting memories, she experiences intense dreams involving Doug. The mysterious events in Haven continue to escalate, deepening the tension and raising questions about the forces at play.
