Description: In *The Purge: Election Year* (2016), set in the year 2022, Charlene “Charlie” Roan, a young girl, and her family are brutally attacked by a masked purger during the annual Purge night. The assailant forces her mother to play a cruel game called “Mommy’s Choice,” where she must choose the sole survivor. Charlie is selected, leaving her to witness the murder of her mother, father, and brother.
Eighteen years later, in 2040, Charlie has become a U.S. Senator running for the presidency, vowing to end the Purge. Leo Barnes, a former police sergeant, now serves as her head of security. The New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) and their candidate, Minister Edwidge Owens, see Charlie as a threat. To eliminate her, they revoke immunity for government officials during Purge night, exposing her to danger.
Meanwhile, Joe Dixon, a deli owner, prepares to guard his store after his Purge insurance becomes unaffordable, despite warnings from his assistant Marcos and Laney Rucker, a former purger turned EMT. Laney patrols the city with her partner Dawn, assisting the wounded. As the Purge begins, Joe and Marcos fend off an attack by vengeful teenagers.
Charlie decides to stay at her home rather than a secure location, surrounded by security including Barnes, Chief Couper, and Eric. However, Couper and Eric reveal themselves as NFFA operatives, allowing a neo-Nazi paramilitary group led by Earl Danzinger to infiltrate the house. Barnes helps Charlie escape, detonating a bomb that kills the traitors.
The film explores themes of political corruption, survival, and the consequences of a society that glorifies violence.
