Description: “The Proposition” is a 2005 Australian Western film directed by John Hillcoat, with a screenplay by Nick Cave. The movie features an ensemble cast including Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Emily Watson, John Hurt, Danny Huston, and David Wenham. Filming took place in Winton, Queensland, and production concluded in 2004. The film was released widely in Australia in 2005 and had a U.S. theatrical run in 2006 under First Look Pictures.
Set in the 1880s Australian outback, the story follows Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce), who, along with his gang, faces a violent confrontation with the police. All gang members are killed except for Charlie and his younger brother, Mikey. Captain Morris Stanley (Ray Winstone) makes a grim proposition: Charlie must kill his older brother, Arthur Burns (Danny Huston), who is wanted for rape and murder, to save Mikey from execution by Christmas. With Mikey held captive, Charlie embarks on a perilous mission to find Arthur.
During his journey, Charlie discovers the burned remains of the Hopkins family, victims of the Burns gang. He encounters Jellon Lamb (John Hurt), a drunken bounty hunter, in a cantina where the owner has been brutally killed. Charlie soon realizes Lamb is tracking him and his brothers. After a confrontation, Charlie knocks him unconscious. Later, while resting, Charlie is attacked by Aboriginal men, who spear him in the chest. Just before losing consciousness, he witnesses one of his attackers being shot.
The film delves into themes of loyalty, justice, and survival in the harsh and unforgiving Australian landscape.
